D-Glucose-2-13C is a molecule that has been used to develop an optical sensor. The sensor is based on the principle that glucose attaches to the glucose analog, which can be detected by measuring the 13C signal in the nmr spectra. D-Glucose-2-13C has been used in pharmaceutical preparations for diabetes management and as a tool for cancer research. This molecule has also shown promise as a biomarker for metabolic disorders and disease activity. D-Glucose-2-13C binds to mammalian tissue, adipose, or other cells with high levels of glucose transporters. The uptake of this molecule occurs via two mechanisms: (1) diffusion; and (2) carrier mediated transport.
