5-Fluoroindole is a plant growth regulator that belongs to the class of compounds called anthranilates. It is a precursor for many other compounds, such as tryptophan, serotonin, and melatonin. 5-Fluoroindole inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the amino acid methionine. This binding prevents the formation of an enzyme-substrate complex that is required for protein synthesis. The inhibition of protein synthesis causes a decrease in the production of proteins vital for cell division and ultimately leads to cell death by apoptosis. 5-Fluoroindole has been shown to inhibit the growth of viruses in vitro and may be used as an antiviral agent against HIV in humans.
