Fluorescein is a colorless, water-soluble, non-toxic crystalline compound that has found use as a tracer in biochemistry and medical diagnostics. It is used primarily to diagnose problems with the blood vessels of the retina and other parts of the eye. Fluorescein angiography is used to visualize the circulatory system by detecting changes in blood flow near the surface of the skin. The serum concentration of fluorescein can be measured using spectrophotometry. Irradiation causes fluorescence which can be observed using an optical device called an angiograph or fluoroscope.
