2-Fluoro-5-hydroxybenzonitrile is a catalyst that is used in the hydrogenation of unsaturated fatty acids to produce saturated fats. The 2-fluoro substituent on the nitrile group increases the acidity of the molecule, which makes it more reactive. This catalyst has a cyano group and a halogen atom, which are electron withdrawing groups that increase its reactivity. It also contains an amino group and a hydrogenation catalyst, which can be used to catalyze hydrolysis reactions as well as hydrogenation reactions. 2-Fluoro-5-hydroxybenzonitrile is soluble in water and other polar solvents.
