2-(Formylamino)propanoic acid is an amino acid that belongs to the group of formylating agents. It has been found in a marine sponge and its structure is similar to that of penicillin, which is an antibiotic. 2-(Formylamino)propanoic acid can be used for the treatment of fungal infections by binding to the active site on the fungus' penicillium enzyme and blocking its function. This compound also inhibits certain enzymes, such as pancreatic lipase, and can be hydrolyzed by esterases or glucuronidases.
