2-(2-Furyl)-1H-benzimidazole (FBZ) is an insecticide that belongs to the group of benzimidazoles. It is fungicidal and has been shown to be active against wild-type strains of Penicillium digitatum, Aspergillus fumigatus, and Trichoderma viride. FBZ is a fluorescent agent that can be used in surface methodology as a measure of microbial contamination. This compound has a carbonyl group at position 2, which absorbs light in the ultraviolet region. The fluorescence spectrum can be measured by fluorescence spectrometry. The quinoline ring system absorbs light in the visible region and emits it at longer wavelengths. The intensity of fluorescence depends on the concentration of FBZ.
