Fenthionsulfoxide is a sulfoxide that is used as an insecticide. It inhibits the growth of insects by interfering with the synthesis of fatty acids and alkylthio groups in their cells. Fenthionsulfoxide has been shown to cause increased levels of cholesterol, phospholipids, and triglycerides in human serum. This compound also reacts with rat liver microsomes when dissolved in chloroform, producing water-soluble reaction products that are easily chromatographed. The oxidation of fenthion sulfoxide produces sulfoxides that can be detected using chemical ionization or reaction with receptor α (a specific antibody for this molecule). Fenthionsulfoxide can be extracted from a sample using solid phase microextraction followed by acetate extraction. Finally, it is analyzed using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method.
