9-Formylphenanthrene is a carcinogen that is used in the production of sodium carbonate. It is an emission gas that is emitted by the burning of coal, oil, and gas. 9-Formylphenanthrene has been shown to inhibit cancer cells in laboratory tests. The mechanism for this inhibition may be due to its ability to bind to hydroxyl groups on aromatic hydrocarbons, inhibiting their metabolism and preventing them from binding to DNA. 9-Formylphenanthrene has also been shown to have pharmacokinetic properties. In one study, it was found that quinoline derivatives are metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes at a higher rate than other drugs.
