FURA-2 is a cell membrane-permeant, fluorescent dye that is useful in measuring intracellular calcium concentrations. FURA-2 can be used to measure changes in the concentration of calcium ions in cells and tissues. The probe is excited by light at 340 nm and emits fluorescence at 510 nm when it is bound to the cell membrane. This technique has been applied to study nerve tissue, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) physiology, and chromaffin cells. It has also been used as a probe for extracellular activity and ganglia fluorescence.
