Fluroxypyr meptyl is a herbicide that belongs to the class of carbonyl group herbicides. It is a non-selective, post-emergence herbicide that inhibits the growth of plants by inhibiting photosynthesis. Fluoroacetic acid reacts with the terminal residues of fatty acids in the chloroplasts and prevents the formation of carotenoids and chlorophyll, blocking photosynthesis. Fluroxypyr meptyl has been shown to be effective against grasses and broadleaf weeds in field corn, soybeans, wheat, rice, sorghum, and sugar cane. Resistance to this herbicide can be found in certain species such as pratense l., which is resistant due to its ability to metabolize fluoroacetic acid through a different pathway than other plants.
