9-Fluorenylmethyl 1-benzotriazolyl carbonate is a reagent that is soluble in chloroform, ether, and organic solvents. It can be used for the preparation of 9-fluorenylmethyl esters from amines. Preparative methods are carried out with diethyl ether and chloroformate as solvents. The compound can also be used to prepare 9-fluorenylmethyl esters from carboxylic acids by reaction with chloroform or ethyl acetate in the presence of 1-hydroxybenzotriazole. 9-Fluorenylmethyl 1-benzotriazolyl carbonate is an excellent leaving group for nucleophilic substitution reactions.
