Fenoxazoline is a pharmaceutical preparation that belongs to the group of fatty esters. It has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against a number of bacteria, including those resistant to cefpodoxime proxetil. Fenoxazoline is also used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. The physiological function of fenoxazoline is not known, but it may be due to its ability to block the binding site for bacterial fatty acid synthase, which prevents the production of bacterial cell membrane lipids. Fenoxazoline is also used as an analog for other drugs with similar chemical structures and functions. Fenoxazoline has protease activity that can be inhibited by protease inhibitors like phenylmethanesulfonyl fluoride (PMSF).
