4-Fluorophenylacetic acid is a potent anti-tumor agent that has been shown to inhibit tumor growth and cause regression of established tumors. 4-Fluorophenylacetic acid is metabolized by hydroxylation to form 2-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, which is an analog of phenylacetate. This compound inhibits the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in the bowel and reduces inflammation caused by ulcerative colitis. This drug also has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of fatty acids in rats with inflammatory bowel disease. 4-Fluorophenylacetic acid can be used as a pharmaceutical preparation for chromatographic analysis or as a starting material for the synthesis of other compounds.
