• Descrição: Ferrous ascorbate is a form of iron that is bound to ascorbic acid. This compound has low bioavailability and a high reactivity with other substances, which reduces its effectiveness to only about 10% of the iron in ferrous sulfate. Ferrous ascorbate has been shown to increase body mass index in women, but not in men. It also increases the number of spermatozoa and the uptake of this compound by spermatozoa. Ferrous ascorbate may be useful for treating anemia caused by chronic inflammation or reactive oxygen species-mediated damage to erythrocytes. Ferrous ascorbate reacts with hydrochloric acid in human serum to form ferric chloride and hydrogen peroxide, which can cause oxidative stress.
