It is an example of a transition metal ligand that is used for cross-coupling reactions. Fmoc-4-iodo-L-phenylalanine has been shown to have product ions at m/z 222, 204, and 187. The labile nature of this compound has led to its use in solid phase peptide synthesis, which can be carried out efficiently in a lab setting. The mechanistic theory suggests that Fmoc-4-iodo-L-phenylalanine undergoes macrolactamization with the help of an amine catalyst to form a phenyliminium ion intermediate. This intermediate reacts with an alcohol to form the desired product.
