This antibiotic has been shown to be effective against resistant mutants of bacteria such as subtilis and has been used in medical research as a fluorescent probe for studying tryptophan fluorescence properties. 4-Fluoro-DL-tryptophan also binds to the enzyme aminoacyl tRNA synthetase, preventing the attachment of amino acids to tRNA molecules.
