5-Fluoroisophthalonitrile is a ligand that binds to metal ions in order to form a coordination complex. It has been shown that 5-fluoroisophthalonitrile binds to copper and zinc ions, forming coordination complexes with the metal ion in the plane of the ligands. The magnetic properties of this compound have also been studied. The crystal structure of 5-fluoroisophthalonitrile has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. This compound is synthesized in two steps from 2,4,6-trichlorobenzaldehyde and methylamine hydrochloride.
