11-Fluoroundecanoic acid (11FA) is a prodrug that is converted to 11-fluoro-1,4-dihydropyridine-2,6(3H,5H)-dione (FDP) in the body. FDP inhibits tumor cell growth by inhibiting DNA and RNA synthesis. 11FA is synthesized from undecanoic acid with the addition of two fluorine atoms on the terminal carbon chain. The yields are high and it can be prepared from inexpensive starting materials. This compound has been shown to inhibit tumor growth in cultured cells, but has not been tested in animals or humans. 11FA may have potential as a chemotherapeutic agent, but more research is needed before it can be used in clinical practice.
