1-(Fluoromethyl)-4-Nitrobenzene is a tosylate salt that is an electrolyte. It can be prepared by the addition of sodium metal in dry ether to 1-fluoro-4-nitrobenzene. This reaction proceeds via hydrogen fluoride elimination and the formation of a C-C bond cleavage. The product is soluble in water, alcohols, and ether, but insoluble in most organic solvents. 1-(Fluoromethyl)-4-Nitrobenzene has been shown to have strong nucleophilic properties and binds to chloride ions with high affinity, which makes it useful for substitution reactions with halides.
