(4S)-4-(Fluoromethyl)-5-oxo-L-proline is an amino acid that has a chiral center and can exist as either the levorotary (S) or dextrorotary (R) form. The natural form of this amino acid is the L-isomer, which is found in proteins such as collagen. The synthesis of (4S)-4-(Fluoromethyl)-5-oxo-L-proline begins with the hydrogenation of 4-fluoroaniline to produce 4-(fluoromethyl)phenol. This compound undergoes dehydrofluorination to produce 2,2'-difluoroethanol. The 2,2'-difluoroethanol reacts with 4-(trimethylsilyl)methyl chloride to form the desired product, (4S)-4-(fluoromethyl)-5-oxo-L
