(2S,4R)-4-Fluoropyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid is a fluorinated amino acid that has been shown to stabilize proteins against denaturation. It has also been shown to induce the formation of electron transfer complexes with the hydroxyl group of tyrosine residues in a model protein. The dipole moment of (2S,4R)-4-fluoropyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid is higher than that of natural amino acids, which may account for its stabilizing effect. It can be used as a building block for the synthesis of other fluorinated amino acids and it can be used in vivo to study protein biosynthesis and stability.
