(E)-4-[4-(2-Fluorophenyl)phenyl]-4-hydroxybut-2-enoic acid is a pharmacokinetic probe that is used to study the biotransformations of nitro and benzyl groups. (E)-4-[4-(2-Fluorophenyl)phenyl]-4-hydroxybut-2-enoic acid has been shown to be conjugated with glutathione, which may explain its ability to chelate metal ions. This compound also has a high metabolic stability in humans. The nmr spectra of (E)-4-[4-(2-Fluorophenyl)phenyl]-4-hydroxybut-2-enoic acid show a characteristic frequency shift due to the presence of the deuterium atom.
