It is produced in large quantities due to its use as an organic solvent, with trifluoromethylsulfonyl chloride being the main industrial source. 3-Fluoro-3-(hydroxymethyl)oxetane has been used to synthesize other related compounds. The reaction yields ethanesulfonic acid and hydrogen fluoride as byproducts. 3-Fluoro-3-(hydroxymethyl)oxetane is soluble in organic solvents such as dichloromethane, chloroform, or acetone.
