It is a noncompetitive antagonist at muscarinic receptors and blocks postsynaptic acetylcholine release from cholinergic neurons. It has been shown to have no effect on blood pressure but does cause an increase in locomotor activity in animals. This drug binds to the hippocampal formation and the ventral hippocampus, which are areas of the brain that are involved in memory and spatial navigation. The distribution of this drug postulated to be due to its ability to penetrate micron sized openings in cell membranes.
