2-Formylcinnamic acid is a metabolite of cinnamic acid that is formed by the oxidation of cinnamoyl-CoA. It is a colorless solid with a melting point of about 116 degrees Celsius. 2-Formylcinnamic acid has been shown to be an intermediate in the formation of phthalic acid and naphthalene from cinnamic acid. These compounds are used in the production of plasticizers, dyes, and pesticides. 2-Formylcinnamic acid can also be produced as a result of photochemical reactions in the atmosphere. It can be used to detect gaseous molecules such as ozone, nitric oxide, sulfur dioxide, and methane by absorbing light at different wavelengths. The reaction products are determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry or multichannel analysis with particle detection.
