Duocarmycin SA is a monoclonal antibody that binds to the hydroxyl group of duocarmycin A and B. It has been shown to have potent antitumor activity against solid tumours. Duocarmycin SA also induces apoptosis in cancer cells by blocking the epidermal growth factor receptor, which leads to the activation of caspases and cleavage of poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP). This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division.
