Gallium trifluoromethanesulfonate is a synthetic, organometallic compound that is used as an insecticidal agent. It has been shown to synergistically inhibit the growth of viruses in vitro with other antiviral agents, such as ribavirin and cidofovir. Gallium trifluoromethanesulfonate has been shown to be effective against a variety of RNA viruses including Sindbis virus, West Nile virus, and hantavirus. Gallium trifluoromethanesulfonate is also used to synthesize cationic polymers for use in biomedical applications. This compound can be dehydrated to form gallium(III) trifluoroacetate salt with minimal toxicity. The methodologies for this dehydration are numerous and include butyric acid or sodium methoxide, which can be used as an acid catalyst.
