Gadolinium oxide is a paramagnetic, radioactive metal oxide that is used in MRI and other medical imaging techniques. It is a component of gadolinium-based contrast agents, which are injected into the body to enhance the visibility of certain tissues or organs during MRI scans. Gadolinium oxide has been shown to be toxic to cells in vitro and in vivo. This toxicity may be due to its ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and generate ROS in the process. The cytotoxicity of gadolinium oxide has also been observed when it is irradiated with near infrared light, generating ROS that induce oxidative stress.
