Gonyautoxin 3 is a potent toxin that belongs to the group of dinoflagellate toxins. It has been found in the fatty acid extract from dinoflagellates, and has been identified as a potent inhibitor of the mitochondrial ATPase. Gonyautoxin 3 inhibits the activity of citrate synthase, leading to a decrease in fatty acid oxidation and an increase in acetyl-CoA synthesis. The resulting accumulation of acetyl-CoA leads to the production of malonyl-CoA, which is an inhibitor of carnitine palmitoyltransferase I. This inhibition leads to reduced β-oxidation and increased levels of long chain fatty acids. Gonyautoxin 3 also induces apoptosis in humans by inhibiting protein synthesis through inhibition of mRNA translation and activation of caspases 9 and 3.
