D-Glutamic acid alpha-benzyl ester is a synthetic antimicrobial agent that has been used to treat pasteurellosis and other microbial infections. It is an acylguanidine, which means it contains an acyl group attached to a guanidine nitrogen. The nitro group in the molecule makes this compound very reactive and lable, meaning it breaks down easily under certain conditions such as heat or light. This compound also acts as a siderophore, which are small organic molecules that bind iron and allows bacteria to absorb it. D-glutamic acid alpha-benzyl ester binds to ornithine, which is an amino acid found in high concentrations in microorganisms, leading to its antimicrobial activity.
