(S)-Glycidyl methyl ether is a chiral compound that has been shown to form complexes with lanthanide ions. The molecular geometry of this compound is related to its ability to bind to the lanthanide ion. Complexes with enantiopure (i.e., pure) ligands are more stable than those of racemic (i.e., mixed) ligands, which leads to better binding properties and higher yields in organic synthesis. The (S)-glycidyl methyl ether complex with lanthanum has been shown experimentally at room temperature and at temperatures up to 50°C, but not at elevated temperatures. This complex can be formed non-covalently or covalently, with d-alanine as the nucleophile. Solvents used for this process include acetone and dichloromethane.
