3,4-Propylenedioxythiophene is an organic compound that contains a hydroxyl group on the 3rd carbon and a double bond on the 4th carbon. It is soluble in organic solvents and has redox potentials of -0.14 V vs. Ag/AgCl. The polymer film that forms when this monomer reacts with other monomers is processable and can be used for applications such as functional coatings, adhesives, and polymers. The polymerization reaction of 3,4-propylenedioxythiophene can be controlled by adding crosslinkers to the reaction mixture to form polymers with varying properties. 3,4-Propylenedioxythiophene has optical properties that make it useful in light emitting diodes (LEDs).
