5-Hexen-1-ol is a hydroxyl group that is found in an unsaturated alkyl chain with a six carbon backbone. It has been shown to be an activated species with a kinetic rate of 0.0055 min−1, which is slower than the rate of dimethyl fumarate. The nitric oxide synthase (NOS) enzyme catalyzes the reaction by oxidizing L-arginine to produce L-citrulline and NO. Dimethyl fumarate inhibits NOS by binding to the cofactor tetrahydrobiopterin, which leads to a decrease in nitric oxide production and results in decreased inflammation. 5-Hexen-1-ol has been shown to be chemically stable at pH 7 and has a lipophilic nature due to its hydrochloric acid ester hydrochloride form.
