Hexafluoro-2-hydroxyisobutyric acid is a perfluorinated compound that is used as a precursor for the production of fluoropolymers. It is also used for the preparation of other organic compounds, such as pharmaceuticals and herbicides. Hexafluoro-2-hydroxyisobutyric acid has been shown to be an effective radiation source in molecular beam epitaxy. Laminar flow conditions are required to prevent the formation of bubbles. The optimum parameters for the production of hexafluoro-2-hydroxyisobutyric acid are annealing at 100°C with a 2:1 ratio of hydrogen gas to piperidine gas. Crystallographic data have been obtained by X-ray diffraction using Cu Kα radiation at room temperature and constant pressure on a transfer cell with an introducing system.
