2-(Hydroxymethyl)-5-methoxy-4H-pyran-4-one is a liquid that can be used in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. The compound is an intermediate in the synthesis of cyanoacetamide, which is a platelet aggregation inhibitor. This product has been shown to inhibit blood platelet aggregation, as well as to have absorption spectra that are similar to those of acetaminophen. 2-(Hydroxymethyl)-5-methoxy-4H-pyran-4-one also has the ability to bind to ethyl cyanoacetate and acrylic acid.
