3-Hydroxy-5-methylbenzaldehyde is a natural product that can be found in the bark of the white cedar tree. It is an isomer of 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde. This compound has been shown to react with sodium carbonate to form an alkylating agent with high volatility. The reaction produces volatile compounds, such as decane, which may contribute to the characteristic odour of this compound. 3-Hydroxy-5-methylbenzaldehyde has been reported to have anti-inflammatory properties and shows some activity against cancer cells at low doses.
