1-Hydroxy-3-cyclohexene is a chemical that belongs to the group of phenols. It is an efficient inhibitor of bacterial growth and has been shown to be a potent antimicrobial agent against P. aeruginosa, which is a common cause of chronic lung infections in cystic fibrosis patients. 1-Hydroxy-3-cyclohexene inhibits bacterial growth by reacting with the cell wall and causing cell lysis. It also inhibits the enzymatic activity of pyrazine 2 carboxylic acid, which is necessary for cell wall biosynthesis. 1-Hydroxy-3-cyclohexene has been shown to have no adverse effects on human cells at concentrations up to 100 µM, making it a potential candidate for use as an antifungal agent in humans.
