3-Hydroxy-3-methylvaleric acid is a polyester that is synthesized in the human body by the enzyme 3-hydroxyisobutyryl-CoA hydrolase (HIBADH). It is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of valine and leucine. The compound has been shown to interact with homogenates of human urine and also to inhibit the growth of species from the genera Escherichia, Klebsiella, Proteus, and Citrobacter when used as a carbon source. This substance has been found to have an inhibitory effect on cancer diagnosis using fluorescence spectroscopy. 3-Hydroxy-3-methylvaleric acid may be useful for cancer therapy due to its ability to bind amide groups on proteins.
