Heneicosane is a chiral compound that is used as a model system to study the binding of odorants. The carthamus tinctorius plant produces heneicosane and its acetate extract, which has been shown to have antibacterial efficacy against infectious diseases. Heneicosane also has a hydroxyl group, which can react with other compounds by way of substitution or addition. Reaction mechanisms with heneicosane include nucleophilic attack at the carbonyl carbon and electrophilic addition at the double bond. This compound also reacts with proteins to form adducts and participates in phase transitions by changing from liquid to solid below room temperature.
