2-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)1H-benzimidazole is a hydroxylated benzimidazole derivative with a proton transfer reaction. It has been shown to have binding constants of 6.5 x 10 M and 2.6 x 10 M for the picolinic acid and hydrogen bond, respectively. It has also been shown to form an intermolecular hydrogen bond with water molecules in the cavity and a crystal structure that contains intramolecular hydrogen bonding. This compound is used in pharmaceutical preparations as a fluorescence probe for studying the fluorescence properties of benzimidazoles. 2-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)1H-benzimidazole also exhibits emissions at around 390 nm when excited by ultraviolet light, making it useful as a fluorescent dye in various applications including labeling biomolecules and fluorescent proteins.
