Haloperidol decanoate is a long-acting form of haloperidol, which is an antipsychotic medication. It has the ability to bind to the dopamine D2 receptors, which are implicated in schizophrenia. Haloperidol decanoate has been shown to have a statistically significant effect on locomotor activity and chronic oral toxicity. The pharmacokinetic properties of this drug are dose dependent. Haloperidol decanoate binds at high affinity to the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, which is associated with energy metabolism. Long-term efficacy studies have shown that it can be used for treatment of schizophrenia with minimal side effects.
