3-Hydroxy benzopyrene (3-HPB) is a metabolite of benzopyrene, which is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. It has been shown to be toxic to the liver and lungs, and can affect mitochondrial functions. 3-HPB has been detected in human serum, urine, and breast milk samples. The toxicity of 3-HPB has been studied by exposing rats to different concentrations of this compound. The levels of 3-HPB in rat liver microsomes have been shown to increase with age as well as with body mass index. This compound can be extracted from biological samples using dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE). DSPE is an analytical method that uses silica particles for sample preparation before analysis by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). HPLC is a technique used for separating organic molecules based on their size and charge.
