The matrix effect can be reduced by using hydroxymethyl clenbuterol, which reacts with the amido group on the sample. Hydroxymethyl clenbuterol can also be detected in a shorter time than other forms of clenbuterol because it is more degradable and less stable. This form also reacts to β-adrenergic receptors, so it may be used to detect plant toxins that are similar to these receptors.
