Descrição:Hymenialdisine is a molecule that is used to diagnose hyperproliferative diseases. It can be radiolabeled with the radioisotope carbon-14 and then injected into the body, where it accumulates in cells. The amount of radioactivity in the cells is then measured with a scintillation counter. This method has been used to detect cancerous cells in vivo by measuring the amount of radioactive material that accumulates in tumor tissue.
The mechanism for this process is not fully understood, but there are two possible pathways: (1) DNA damage triggers an activation signal that leads to production of monoclonal antibodies against the damaged DNA or (2) radiation induces repair mechanisms that activate antibody production. Recent research has shown that caffeine may block some steps in this process, including the induction of DNA damage and cellular proliferation.
