4-Hydroxy-3-(hydroxymethyl)benzaldehyde is an aldehyde that belongs to the group of aromatic compounds. It is soluble in alcohols and insoluble in water. It reacts with formic acid to form the corresponding carboxylic acid, which may be converted into a variety of derivatives by reactions with other reagents. The enzyme preparations are used for the conversion of fats, oils, and grease (FOG) into biodiesel fuel. 4-Hydoxy-3-(hydroxymethyl)benzaldehyde has been shown to have an activation energy of 156 kJ mol-1. This value indicates that its reaction rate will be slow at low temperatures and high at high temperatures.
