3-Hydroxy sebacic acid (3-HSA) is a fatty acid that is excreted in the urine of patients with a deficiency in the enzyme 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase. 3-HSA is a metabolite of polylactic acid, which is used in biodegradable plastics. 3-HSA can be used to diagnose this condition by measuring its concentration in urine samples. The enzyme activity of 3-hydroxyacyl coenzyme A dehydrogenase has been shown to be inhibited by hydroxyl groups on the fatty acid molecule and by high concentrations of fat or lipid in cells. This inhibition leads to increased levels of 3-HSA as well as other metabolites.
