17b-Hydroxyprogesterone is a progesterone that is naturally synthesized by the body and plays an important role in pregnancy. 17b-Hydroxyprogesterone can be used to induce abortions and has been shown to block the production of estrogens, which are responsible for maintaining the endometrium. The drug also blocks the action of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that is involved in the regulation of mood and sexual arousal. 17b-Hydroxyprogesterone binds to progesterone receptors on cells and alters gene expression. It can inhibit cell proliferation by decreasing the production of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α), a hormone that regulates cell growth. 17b-Hydroxyprogesterone can be measured using immunoassays, serum levels, or assays based on cells from humans or animals.br>br>
