The reaction of 1-hydroxy-3-oxo-1,3-dihydro-1,2-benzoiodoxole with a mixture of palladium acetate and triphenylphosphine in aqueous ethanol yields the desired product. The hydroxyl group is used as the leaving group and is replaced with a benzotrifluoride group. This process is catalyzed by palladium and occurs at room temperature in an efficient method that does not require high pressures or elevated temperatures. The product obtained is a hypervalent compound that has macrocrystalline properties.
