Hydrocortisone 21-hemisuccinate is a synthetic hormone that is structurally similar to cortisol. It has been shown to inhibit the production of eosinophil peroxidase, which may be responsible for its anti-inflammatory effects. Hydrocortisone 21-hemisuccinate also has hepatoprotective properties and can be used to treat autoimmune diseases. This drug has been shown to reduce the mitochondrial membrane potential in human cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit phospholipase A2 activity. Hydrocortisone 21-hemisuccinate also inhibits the growth of hepatocyte-like cells when treated with dextran sulfate sodium salt, which is a chemical that causes cell death by osmotic lysis. Hydrocortisone 21-hemisuccinate can also be used as a substrate film in biochemical assays, where it binds with sodium salts and forms an insoluble precipitate that can be measured
