Hexyl bromide is a reactive chemical that is used for quaternizing, which produces compounds with a benzene ring that have a high stability and reactivity. It was first synthesized in 1857 by the French chemist Charles-Adolphe Wurtz and is used to prepare antimicrobial agents. Hexyl bromide has been shown to be effective against bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium perfringens. However, it is not active against acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex. Hexyl bromide can be used as a model system for studying phase transitions of pyridinium salts due to its thermal expansion properties.
